After I got a few dwarven ships for the Uncharted Seas game, I started to wonder how hard they would be to make my own versions. No good reason, just because.

So anyway, here's the first couple of pictures. I apologise for the picture quality...

Four strips of 1mm plastic card for the hull; laminated together and carved to shape with a pair of scissors and some sandpaper. Next, I sanded the deck of the ship to give the milliput a key, and then spread a 0.5mm layer over the fore and aft sections. My version is going to carry a couple of HUGE guns laid along the deck, so a longer fore deck is called for.

And here we go. The decking was impressed with the back of an X-acto knife. I have the main cannons now; pieces of plastic tubing from a lolly stick (never throw anything useful away). I need to go and get some thinner tube for the cannon on the sides, though... and on that note, does anyone have any ideas for oval tubing in either brass or hard plastic; I need a couple of pieces about 15mm long with a 10mm x 6mm cross-section.

More pictures as the ship develops.

Looking good so far Smiley

I'd recommend either brass or aluminium tubing available from modelling suppliers (plastic would be a pain to make hold the shape desired, unless you melt it either chemically or with direct heat) a judicious bit of squishing will give you a oval section to work with. If nessesary this could easilly be filled with putty afterwards.

(a bit of trigonometry would even give you the diameter tube you'd need Smiley, personally i'd guess 8-9mm LOL)

Here we go again... more constructional pictures:

Mark out the flat section on the top of the superstructure, and work out where the armour plates are going to go.

The height of the superstructure is about 9mm on the original; I cut an 8mm high strip to use as the basis of my structure, as the roof will make it up to 9mm. I'm not sure this is the best way but it makes for a solid block, which is a good thing.

In this picture, the basic block is completed, and the port/starboard guns are attached. I reckoned 5 a side was about right; they were cut from a ball-point pen refill and spaced by pieces of 40 thou (1mm) plastic card to keep them regular. The main guns aren't glued in place yet, I'm not sure how far forward they should project.

Cut the armour from thinner card - in this case, I used 20 thou (½mm) plasticard. I undercoated the gun areas as I wasn't certain I would be able to get a brush inside once I'd put the armour in place!

And work round the rest of the superstructure... test-fitting is your friend here.

More pictures and notes later. Or maybe at the weekend... I'm a bit tired now...

There's a sloping plate now, same as the real battleship, with the triple cannon extending out below it. I'm looking at doing the top of the superstructure now... wondering whether I should add a turret from the 'Land Ironclads' ranges - http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/Frames/VLI/Items/VLI-103.html perhaps? I'm sure I have some of them in the lead graveyard...

Okay, two options - guns forward or back?

Obviously still needs the planking on top of the superstructure, the funnels and all the little detailing bits, but the basic structure's there.

I guess if the dwarves have 'Forge', 'Hammer' and 'Anvil' class ships, this could be a 'Bellows' class battleship... 'cos it blows things away!

Very cool. Wink To me it seems kinda.... I don't know, but I think that it would be nice to have the front plate more towards the front to cover more of the cannons. But that's just me, and my observation. The ship looks great! The name original, and not to get to side tracked, but is "Land Ironclads" a game, or a miniature line? Smiley

Land Ironclads is a game by Brigade Models; it's also a miniature line for the same game. It's about 2mm scale, huge Victorian Sci-Fi vehicles, and there are a good number of bits there that I reckon I could use to dress up the Bellows class battleship...

Excellent work there Wulfric Smiley

(I think the middle barrel is EXACTLY the length YOU wanted it to be Wink)

Looking forward to seeing it painted.

I had a fair degree of difference in the length of gun because I was thinking that the crews would need room to work. However, thinking about it again, the central crew would be jammed between the breeches of the outer two guns, and probably deafened inside the first few minutes of a battle. So either the guns should all have the same length of barrel protruding, or perhaps they should even have the central gun set back?

Anyway, I'll make up a couple more sets of guns and see what looks best... thanks for the comments.
